Expert Insights

Prepreg cure optimization with the ESR

Optimizing cure for prepreg materials is challenging given the complexities of resin curing. Alpha Technologies expert Unal Yilmazoglu joins Richard Hanzlik to discuss the unexpected effects of:

Cure temperatureRamp ratePressureOut-timeLayup orientation

They also explain how the ESR gives deeper insight into each parameter for more strategic prepreg optimization.

The Study

Five parameters that shape prepreg performance

Alpha Technologies researchers evaluated how five processing parameters influence the rheological behavior and mechanical properties of prepreg composites using the ESR.

Pressure

Optimal pressure helps resin flow and bond effectively, promoting uniformity and better fiber-resin consolidation.

Heating ramp rate

The right ramp rate helps resin flow through fibers and minimizes voids. Ramping too fast can hinder cure and create uneven resin distribution.

Cure temperature

Higher cure temperatures improve thermal stability but can cause warping. The key is balancing thermal stability and mechanical integrity.

Out-time

Out-time affects viscosity and the resin cure process. Extended out-time can improve flow and final properties by adjusting viscosity before cure.

Layup orientation

Fiber orientation affects strength, stiffness and load-bearing capacity, with a 45-degree orientation showing balanced performance.

About the Study

Developed by Alpha’s composite experts

Unal Yilmazoglu and Richard Hanzlik developed this in-depth look at composite prepreg failure modes to improve understanding of prepreg performance. The study used the Premier ESR®, which complies with ASTM D7750.
